Whether this is your first visit to ‘The Mile High City' or if you are a seasoned traveller, the Colorado capital is bursting with cultural sights and outdoor activities. Denver is home to some of the most stunning architecture, museums, and historical sites. Being on the doorsteps of the Rocky Mountains makes exploring the great outdoors easy with a rental car at the ready. It’s always a great time to get acquainted with this vibrant cosmopolitan city!

What to See in Denver

Being one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, Denver is a sprawling center of activities and never-ending sight-seeing spots for tourists.

Start your tour with a visit to the Denver Arts Museum (DAM). Give yourself plenty of time to explore and wander around this huge museum that is home to one of the largest Native American art collections in the USA. The DAM is also renowned for putting on some pretty special multimedia exhibits and interactive installations which are popular for kids and adults alike.

The Molly Brown House Museum is also a huge treasure for history-lovers. A 45-minute tour leads you around the perfectly preserved home of the most famous survivor of the Titanic disaster — Molly Brown. Built in 1889 by the famous architect William Lang, this Colorado home tells the story of Brown’s life after the ill-fated sailing of 1912. Brown later became active in progressive politics and fought for women’s organizations, all the while giving stellar theater performances in her lifetime.

Architecture fans can head straight to Colorado State Capitol Building. Construction on this outstanding building began in 1890. The main material for it is locally sourced and quarried rose onyx stone but it’s the impressive dome covered in 200 ounces of gold leaf that will leave you in awe. The gold leaves were added 18 years after building began to celebrate the Colorado Gold Rush. Free tours of the interior and grounds of the building depart every 45 minutes, but booking is advised for weekends.

If you’re looking to explore the great outdoors, the Red Rocks Amphitheatre is worth the 15-mile drive southwest out of Denver. The natural amphitheater is set between 400ft-high red sandstone rocks and seats 9,000 people for some of the most popular bands during the summer months. Climbing to the top of the amphitheater offers stunning views across the Red Rocks Park and Denver City, but it’s just a tiny part of the 600-acre park. Lace up your hiking boots and lose the crowds along the miles and miles of hiking trails in the park and enjoy the stunning rock formations along the way.

In case you want to spot some of Denver’s wildlife, just drive up Interstate 70. Since 1914, the City of Denver has been maintaining a bison herd on the outskirts of Genesee Park. With a rental car, you can easily spot the herd along Interstate 70 – just make sure the driver keeps their eyes on the road!
